After one and half years Tingya released, Sharad Goyekar still making Tingya alive in awards ceremonies. National award winner getting all praises from all over India for his great achievement. Everyone is now curious about this ‘Small town wonder’. All the news channel & other media giving him hype he deserves. But all in this process we are forgetting about one cute little girl Tarannum Pathan who played Rasheeda (Tingya’s friend in movie). A 13 years old, studying in 8^th standard is still uncovered to public who done brilliant acting with Sharad Goyekar in movie Tingya. As we know Tingya is central character on which film is based and played by Sharad Goyekar. So, it may be natural we remember Sharad in this movie. But on contrary we should not forget about outstanding performance by Tarannum. Sharad was selected to play character of Tingya from 1200 boys in audition; Tarannum also was selected from 900 girls.

On interview with her she looked positive, Tarannum said “I want to be an actress & I will take more efforts for it”. She looked more positive, but a bit amazed with injustice with her. Now she is hoping for getting recognition from audience & making gold of next opportunities to come.

Tarannum is not recognized by media for her role. I hope she will get covered by media & get recognized by people as well….

Tingya belongs to that rare category of films, which not only touches your heart but also stirs your soul deep within! Watching this film is realizing how little do we know or care for the lives of millions of poor and underprivileged Indian farmers and their families.

After being rejected by 40 producers, (some of whom wanted item songs and celebrity names to spruce up the film!), writer-director Mangesh Hadawale finally succeeded in convincing producer Ravi Rai to finance his Marathi film- venture. In just Rs. 27 lacs ( a price even less than a glitzy music video- production!), he made a film that has already won many awards, narrowly missed being India’s Oscar-entry (losing to TZP) and is certain to be accorded the status of a classic in years to come!

Tingya is a tale of a poor farmer’s 7- year old son Tingya (Sharad Goekar) and his unique bond with the family’s pet bullock – Chitangya. Injured in an accident, the bullock becomes useless for the farming work. The harrowed, debt-ridden farmer now faces the dilemma of buying a new bullock for the harvesting season. The only way he can raise money for that purpose is to sell Chitangya to the slaughterhouse. The boy – so deeply attached to his animal friend – is shattered by his father’s decision. Praying to the Gods, requesting to the Godmen, running to the vet – Tingya tries everything in his capacity to save his pet bullock from the butcher’s knife. His best friend and neighbour- Rashida tries her best to help him in his endeavor. Repeatedly Tingya just asks one question, “If you don’t send the sick people to slaughterhouse, then why send sick animals there?” Does he get his answer? Is he able to save his dear Chitangya?

Mangesh Hadwale’s story was apparently based on his own experiences and the reality shows in every frame of the film. Sharad Goekar’s Tingya and Sunil Deo’s Karbhari (Tingya’s father) leave their mark with their intense heartfelt portrayals. But then almost every significant character in this film is memorable!Tingya’s innocent impetuosity, his father’s helplessness, his mother’s resilience, his brother’s indifference, Rashida’s unquestioning friendship, her grandmother’s unconditional love – every emotion, every feeling comes through so spontaneously and naturally, without ever becoming melodramatic. The camera-work superbly brings to life the inner Maharashtra’s beautiful terrains and captures in detail, the farmers’ simple yet complex lives. Even the single repetitive theme-song – ‘Maaza Zulaa’ perfectly echoes the region’s ethos. Such is the magic of this film that Shyam Benegal was moved to call it ‘Poem’!

The film’s greatest strength is its ability to transcend the tale it tells. Tingya just doesn’t remain a story of a young child’s desperate bid to save his pet. It becomes a tragedy of lives having no control of over their destinies. It shows us how humanity and compassion come second best to poverty and the need for survival. At the same time, it also shows that the circle of life moves on despite all the difficulties and hardships!

Films like Tingya make us uneasy. Suddenly our cushy air-conditioned New World lives centered round a rat-race of promotions and bank-balances; week-end parties and Bollywood gossips seem so meaningless. It shows us an old and tired world out there that still revolves round a day-to-day struggle to just live and let live! There bare-footed children walk for miles to go to school; tired housewives plow in the fields and penniless farmers take their own lives!

`Tingya` star Sharad Goyekar: Namad to National Award winner - Zee News

Mumbai: From growing up in hilly forests to starring in the acclaimed film `Tingya` to topping at one of Maharashtra`s best educational institutes, 11-year-old National Award winning actor Sharad Goyekar`s has been a life-changing journey.

Sharad`s transformation from a rustic lad who was born and brought up in Rajuri village, around 100 km from Pune, is like a fairytale.

Hailing from a nomadic gypsy tribe, the Goyekar family lives in a hamlet of around 30-35 shanties, nearly four kilometres from Rajuri, along with their three horses, around 150 goats and sheep and a few hens.

"The place is infested with leopards, snakes, scorpions and other wild creatures. Sharad grew in their midst, grazing the flock in thick forests," said Mangesh Hadawale, the proud director of the film.

"Tingya", for which Sharad won the National Award for best child actor this week, is a semi-autobiographical film penned by 29-year-old Hadawale who ventured into direction with the multiple award-winning movie.

Released in 2007, "Tingya" is the story of a seven-year-old boy who unsuccessfully tries to save his injured and handicapped bull from the butcher`s knife to pay off the family`s debts. After the bull is slaughtered to save the family, a cow gives birth to a female calf; Tingya treats him as a bull and life goes on...

The realistic and touching film has bagged nearly four dozen national and international awards.

"In fact, when his name was sounded for the first major award in Pune two years ago, we had to send two people to the jungles to search for him. After many hours, they found him grazing his flock. With great difficulty, we convinced him to go on stage to receive the award," Hadawale told reporters.

A leading academic family of Pune that was present at the function was so moved by Sharad`s life story that it immediately offered to `adopt` him and provide him with a good life.

Prakash and Priya Patil, who run the reputed Sinhagad group of educational institutions in and around Pune, finally managed to convince Sharad`s shocked parents - Yeshwant and Yamuna - to `loan` their younger son to them.

"Initially, Sharad was defiant and tried to run away to his parents. He had lived freely in the forests with animals and a handful of friends, moving from place to place. So, this city life was a different world for the simple boy," Priya Patil told IANS.

Gradually, with a lot of love, patience and counselling, they made him stay there, but he preferred to watch television all day, a gadget he had never seen before.

Worried about his future, the Patils, whose son Rohit, 25, studies engineering in the US, decided to admit Sharad to a leading residential public school near Pune.

It was the Sinhagad Springdale Residential Public School at Wadgaon-Budruk, on the outskirts of the city, offering a CBSE syllabus in English medium.

Until then, Sharad had barely completed primary education in a rural Marathi school which he bunked five days each week to play in the forests with his animals.

"We had watched the movie `Tingya` and when I met the child, I felt he had a great potential. So, for the first time, we admitted a Marathi-medium student in the Class 5, CBSE English medium," said the school principal Sunny Mathew.

Not willing to stake its reputation, the school management deployed an army of teachers, counsellors and experts to help Sharad pick up and progress.

"He did remarkably well, given his background. For a child who didn`t know the English alphabet, he ended up scoring 70 percent in Class 5, this year (in Class 6), he topped the school in Sanskrit which he has taken as an optional subject. I am truly proud of this boy," beamed Mathew.

Both Priya Patil and Mathew said Sharad has adjusted extremely well to the rigours of urban life and the boarding school where students from a higher strata of society study - the minimum annual fee is Rs.125,000 per student.

"In fact, Sharad is considered an idol among the students, and he now converses in reasonably good English with everybody. We made it compulsory for all to communicate with him only in English," Mathew said.

Even though the child`s future is secure, his parents continue their simple, nomadic existence outside Rajuri village.

"We have been promised a piece of land to build a permanent home and settle down here by the village authorities, but it has still not come," said Yeshwant Goyekar, Sharad`s father, sitting outside his shanty made of rags and covered with plastic to protect it from the ongoing monsoon.

The only modern technology he uses is the mobile phone, which Hadawale said is more common than proper roads or toilets in the remote parts of the state.

Hadawale said it was sad that despite Sharad bagging the National Award and so many other honours for his performance, the state government had not taken any note of him - unlike the Mumbai slum children who acted in the Oscar-winning movie, "Slumdog Millionaire."

However, Priya Patil said she and her family would strive to provide Tingya - that`s how everybody calls Sharad now - with a good life, the best of education and a promising future.

Tingya star wants to help his parents - NDTV movies

From a poor nomadic hamlet to the national stage to winning the National Award for Best Child Artist 2009, Sharad Goekar's life has been as stunning as his acting abilities.

The 11-year-old who recently won the National Award for his performance in Tingya, a film about a poor farmer boy's desperate struggle to save his bull from the butcher's knife, was found by director Mangesh Hadawale in a tribal hamle 90 kilometres from Pune.

Sharad is from the nomadic Shangar community, and spent his early years tending herds of sheep and had never been to a city. Today, he is not only in a big city, but is also getting the best education and living a life no less than a celebrity.

NDTV caught up with his parents and his teachers for their responses to his recent achievements.

''I remember when he came he had no idea about English. But now he has adjusted himself very well and has become very confident too,'' said Sunny Mathew, Principal, Springdale Public School, Pune, where Sharad is now studying.

Sharad, who is happy about his success has, however, not forgotten those back in the village. He said, "I am very happy here. Then I remember the hard times my parents faced in the village, and that makes me cry.''

His parents still live in a roadside shanty, and it is Sharad's dream to become a bureaucrat or an actor. He says once that happens, he will build a house for his parents.

For the time being, he is grooming himself to meet the President in New Delhi to recieve the National Award.

Eleven-year-old Sharad Goekar might have won a national award for his reel-life histrionics in Marathi film Tingya, but in real life his family is fighting for a place to live in. The family, comprising parents and six children, has been moving from one temporary shelter to another for years and currently stays in a ramshackle tent erected along the Mumbai-Vishakapatnam highway at Rajuri village in Junar taluka of Pune district. “Sharad has received many awards for Tingya, one from President Pratibha Patil. We don’t have a permanent place to eat and sleep; where will we keep this latest award?” asks his mother Yamunabai.

Sharad belongs to the Dhangar community, a nomadic tribe originally from Ahmednagar district. After the success of Tingya, he was taken into Sinhagad Spring Dale English medium school and adopted by a family. “We continue to live in pathetic conditions. Only when our financial condition improves will we be really happy. Otherwise, more awards will only pose the problem of finding a safe place to keep them,” says his father Yeshwant Goekar.

The search for finding a proper living place has already begun. Shirur MP Shivajirao Adhalrao-Patil, in whose parliamentary constituency Ale Phata falls, says he is determined to provide Sharad and his family a decent dwelling place.

“Sharad has brought glory to Maharashtra. The entire nation is singing his praises. Despite hailing from a very poor family, Sharad has shown his class to the world. But it is painful to see a skilled child with no place to live,” he says, adding that he will try to get a readymade house or build one from the MP’s fund.

The other possibility, says the MP, is a flat for Sharad in Pimpri-Chinchwad where many have been earmarked for the poor under the Centre’s Basic Services For Urban Poor (BSUP) policy. “Pimpri-Chinchwad is part of my Shirur constituency. I have every right to demand a house for Sharad. I will talk to civic officials,” he said, adding that he will personally meet the PCMC chief on Thursday.

The Manav Suraksha Haqq Samiti too is getting into the act, writing to Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Sharma for a house for the Goekars. “The family lives in Pune district. Either the PMC or PCMC should take the initiative,” said Manav Kamble of the samiti.

“I have already spoken to the commissioner about this. He said he will have to seek the government’s permission before allotting a flat,” adds Maruti Bhapkar, also of the samiti. The PCMC is constructing over 30,000 flats for the poor.

Sharma said though there was no provision under BSUP to provide housing to someone for having received a national film award, something could be done if the state government agreed. Mayor Aparna Doke said there should no objection from anybody to giving a flat from the thousands that PCMC is constructing.

Marathi film 'Tingya' might have lost out to Aamir Khan's 'Taare Zameen Par' as the official entry to the Oscars, but the film has no dearth of critical acclaim with ace filmmaker Shyam Benegal appreciating it and comparing it to a poem.

'I felt so nice that a veteran like Shyam Benegal told me that my film 'Tingya' is like a poem,' Mangesh Hadawale, the 26-year-old director, told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

'Tingya' made its debut at the 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is a sensitive tale about a boy and his love for his bull, set against the politically charged background of farmers' suicides and life in rural Maharasthra.

' 'Tingya' has done better than my expectations. I never thought that such a small film would do so well,' said Hadawale.

'It is a very realistic film. What children do, what they feel and their antics, which are universal. It's very easy to relate to the film since you can relate with the emotions. That's why people have liked the film so much, and language did not pose a barrier. It is truly a human story.'

The film, which stands out from the clutter of big films, has won various awards and might also be sent as an independent entry to the 81st Academy Awards.

'Right now it's not decided whether we will send the film as an independent category for Oscars or not. This is a call that the producer has to take; so right now I am not very sure,' said Hadawale.

The MTV Youth Icon award was recently conferred on Hadawale, a debutant director.

'I never knew the concept of youth icon before. This is the fifth year when MTV has organised this. In earlier years they have been awarding people of the likes of Anil Ambani, Shah Rukh Khan, etc., but this year they have decided to award people who have made a standing for themselves in spite of problems and without anyone's help,' said Hadawale.

'It felt really nice.'

After the success of his debut film, the director has diverted his energies towards making a Hindi film.

'I am working on a Hindi film now. The working title of the film is 'Circus' and it will be made around the background of the Lok Sabha.

'I want to make a film which is viewed globally and appeals to the sensibilities of people the world over. It should be real with a streak of entertainment,' he said.

The young director is excited by his newfound success and would like to work with the Khan trio (Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan) apart from Hrithik Roshan, Naseeruddin Shah and Yashpal Yadav.

Everyone around has whole heartedly accepted 'Taare Zameen Par' being the official Indian entry for the 81st Academy Awards in the foreign-language category.
It was quite natural to happen as no other Indian film in the recent times has captured the attention of the people all over India and also been able to communicate so effectively about a serious problem faced by the children like Aamir Khan's directorial debut.
But another very much critically acclaimed and realistic film is also preparing to begin its journey to try to reach the final round of the best foreign film section.
The Marathi film 'Tingya' considered as one responsible for reviving the interest in Marathi cinema will be going to the Oscars as an independent entry.
The fight to represent India at the Academy Awards was between 'TZP' and 'Tingya' directed by the first time film maker Mangesh Hadawale.
Finally after some hours of heated discussions the Jury of the Film Federation of India who are responsible for selecting the official entry to the Oscars gave the positive nod for 'Taare Zameen Par'.
Each and every other element that made the two films memorable and so widely appreciated were discussed in detail by the jury members before deciding on 'TZP'.
The only reason that worked against 'Tingya' getting the first place was the technical superiority that 'TZP' had.
The Marathi film which told the touching story of the relationship between a little boy and his pet bull amid the grave reality of the agrarian crisis in Maharastra penetrated deep inside the minds of all film lovers across the world riding on its fantastic and refreshing story line presented in a way through which the audience could relate to it perfectly.
The big difference in the technical side between the two top contenders was due to the very low budget of Rs.27 lakhs with which 'Tingya' was made.
After loosing out to 'TZP' the producer Ravi Rai decided to take his film as an independent entry.
It was for the second time 'TZP' and 'Tingya' competed against each other.
In the MAMI International Film Festival Awards the Marathi film had beaten Aamir's product and also 'Chak De India' to bag the top honour.
However producer Ravi Rai does not have any hard feelings due to 'TZP' getting the chance to be the official entry.
In fact 'TZP' is one of his favourite films and he does fully agree with the factor of technical finesse as given out by the jury members.
Whether 'Tingya' got selected to be India's film at the Oscar or not is not what has to be thought upon.
The incredible trip of this small yet beautiful film from a time when it was rejected by 42 producers, a determined man who believed in the simple innocent story going ahead with the project armed with a budget that do not even equal the fund of a top class music video made in Bollywood in the present times and finally winning over 37 awards globally is equal to getting any big award.

'Tingya' to go to Oscars as independent entry

Critically acclaimed Marathi film "Tingya", a sensitive portrayal of a six-year-old boy's love for his bull in backdrop of Maharashtra's agrarian crisis, will be sent as an independent entry to this year's Oscars 2009 in the foreign language category.

"Tingya", which has won 37 awards including five at the international festivals, lost out to Aamir Khan's "Taare Zameen Par" when a Film Federation of India (FFI) jury chose the latter as India's official entry to the Academy.

Producer of "Tingya" Ravi Rai said he will apply independently. Rai also made it clear that he bore no ill will towards the FFI jury or Aamir's film.

"'Taare Zameen Par' is my personal favourite because a top star like Aamir decided to produce and direct a film about a relevant issue concerning children," Rai said.

Pointed out that "Tingya" was equally good, he claimed the jury members had a difficult choice in selecting the official entry. The decision and went against "Tingya" on grounds that it lacked technical finesse, he said.

"I feel a film's soul is more important," he added. The noted television producer who turned to big screen with "Tingya" directed by newcomer Mangesh Hadawale said all the nine films in fray this year were deserving. "It shows that good times are here for Indian cinema," he added.

Tingya comes to Mumbai with awards and a legend streaming behind it. The legend is that a young man from Junnar, Mangesh Hadawale, wanted to make a film about a boy and a bull. He narrated his script to 41 producers, all of whom said it was a good story, but sorry, not their cup of tea.

The 42nd producer was Ravi Rai. Hadawale met him by the merest chance. Rai heard the story and said, “Let’s make it.” His only stipulation was, “Make it exactly as you told it.” That must have sounded to Hadawale like a hundred violins playing. So he made Tingya. And now it has won prestigious awards at home and is all set to go to Cannes.

The film’s gamut of emotions move in a completely natural way, leaving us free to learn our own moral-political lessons

I cannot help remembering Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali at this point. When this classic film was proposed as an entry for the Cannes Film Festival, a number of powerful voices were raised against the idea. The film would show India “in bad light” they said. It was okay to be abjectly poor but not okay to show the world that you were. Fortunately Pandit Nehru had seen the film and loved it. He intervened and Pather Panchali not only went to Cannes but won the Special Jury Prize for the Best Human Document.

When Tingya goes to Cannes, no voices will be raised against it. India has four (10?) of the world’s richest men, its techies have taken over Silicon Valley, its beauty queen promotes French hair colour and there’s Bollywood, the eternal dream. India’s image is made. Tingya can go tell its story, no problem.

This then is the story. A small farmer’s old bull, Chitangya, falls into a ditch and is permanently incapacitated. The farmer has paid through his nose for a sack of potatoes which await sowing. But Chitangya cannot pull the plough. The farmer faces Sophie’s choice. Unless he sells Chitangya, he cannot buy another bull. Unless he buys another bull, he cannot plough. Unless he ploughs, his family will starve and the money-lender will be at his throat. But Chitangya and the farmer’s younger son, Tingya, have grown up together. Tingya cannot live without him. To make matters worse, Chitangya cannot be sold for farm work. He can only be sold for slaughter. Tingya bawls. With a child’s unanswerable logic he asks why his friend Rashida’s grandmother, who is also old and cannot work, isn’t being sold off to the butcher.

Finally Tingya learns that you can’t argue against old age and death. Nor can you equate human life with animal life. He also learns that life means birth as well.

There’s much else that happens in Tingya. Other threads, dark and bright, are woven into the main story to create the enduring fabric that is village life. Poverty gives the villagers the strength and stoicism to fight for survival against every odd. The noose hangs in the background, but mutual support keeps some necks out of it.

One scene sticks in the mind. It is twilight. Tingya sits on the threshold of the house. His mother comes from the river with a pitcher of water. “Never sit in the doorway when Lakshmi is entering the house,” she admonishes. Tingya asks, “What does that mean — Lakshmi is entering the house?” The mother goes indoors without a word.

That is the great strength of this film — the absence of heavily underlined “messages” and of contrived attempts to squeeze tears out of deeply emotional scenes. Hadawale’s touch is sure. He allows the story to tell itself through beautifully shot locations, perfectly paced editing, punchy dialogue and intense, controlled performances. Its emotions move between love, fear, anxiety, frustration, grief and humour in a completely natural way, like the seasonal cycle itself, leaving us free to learn our own moral-political lessons.

Finally, I’d see the film again just to see Sharad Goekar’s Tingya and Tarannum Pathan’s Rashida.

"Tingya" : The Life of Farmers in Remote Places

On February 29th in 2008, the Finance Minister of the Government of India, Mr P. Chidambaram, announced the Budget for the year 2008-2009 in the Parliament in which the largest amount of 152.5 million dollars was kept aside to clear the debts of farmers in India. Why? The number of farmers' suicides in India spread over the length and breadth of the country had risen greatly. Tingya basically deals with this perennial problem of the farmers in India. However, that is only one of the major issues the film deals with. There are other equal and important issues, both social and domestic, dealt with by this film thus further underling why it qualified for our Critics' Prize.

Tingya is more about the life of farmers in remote villages in India. Their life is controlled by various conditions, i.e. land, weather, manpower, instruments, good seeds, as well as animals. Karbhari is a farmer who cultivates potatoes in a remote village in Maharashtra. His wife and two boys form their family in the strict sense. But that is not true enough. There are many other loved ones in their family like Chitangya, oxen born two months after Tingya. Therefore, the oxen was called Chitangya and treated as the third son of Karbhari's family. One day Chitangya accidentally falls into a deep pit which makes him almost invalid as one of his rear legs was severely injured.

This is the time for Karbhari to plough the land for seeding and two oxen are a must. There are three options available according to his wife: borrow money from the money lender which is readily available, but the recent suicide of Karbhari's friend frightens him from seeking the money lender's help. The next option is to borrow money from Mr Yakoob who is his immediate neighbor and a kind-hearted man. However, Yakoob is not rich enough to be able to support Karbhari at this point in time. Time is also very precious to Karbhari and his sister's husband who is rich and owns a tractor but this is of no help to Karbhari....

The last option is selling Chitangya for slaughtering, thereby earning at least half of the money to buy healthy oxen.... Tingya cannot part with his younger brother Chithagya and this brings to the boil the pre-existing tension in the Karbhari household. The relationship between human beings and animals here in the life of farmers comes out vividly and effectively and it is this which separates this film from the rest.

Tingya also deals with another grave problem of this country, India, which is the intolerance amongst different religions. Here, while Karbhari is a Hindu, his good Samaritan in the next door is Yakoob, who is a Muslim. The bondage is deep and pure.... Something slowly disappearing from the psyche in the land of Ahimsa (non-violence).

Tingya is a painstaking and meticulously made film and brings out the emotional love of a young boy and a bull. It is also visually accomplished and effectively uses raw people to handle various characters including Tingya. Even Chithangya the oxen does a wonderful job expressing the love and pain. Hats off then to Tingya's director Mangesh Hatawale on a unique and marvelous work.

Take a straw poll and Aamir Khan would top as the most dazzling debut director in recent times and his Taare Zameen Par’s child actor Darsheel Safary as the most delightful find. These two darlings of film lovers faced a stiff competition, along with Shah Rukh Khan and his Chak De girls, during the 10th MAMI International Film Festival from Tingya director Mangesh Hadawale and Sharad Goekar, the Marathi film’s child hero.

The 27-year-old Hadawale emerged winner with Tingya bagging the Best Film award in the Indian competition section and the critic’s award in the international category. What makes the victory of a meagre Rs 24 lakh-project unconventional is its storyline—a tale of debt-ridden farmer family’s love for their bull. When the family is forced to sell the bull to the local butcher to pay off their loan after a dismal potato crop, nine-year-old Sharad tries to save the animal.

Despite the grim subject, the film exudes rural charm and innocence. And according to Israeli director Dan Wolman, head of the competition’s jury, “the film’s humane appeal” made them select it as the best film.

About the selection of his subject, Junnar-bred Hadawale says: “I was aware of frequent farmer suicides in Vidarbha. But I was disturbed when someone, who had taught me how to ride a bicycle, ended his life as he couldn’t pay his daughter’s engineering fees due to debt.”

The journey of the film, set and shot in Pune district’s Junnar taluka, has been as interesting as its director’s. Hadawale wrote the script, which borrows generously from his life, in 2003, but finding a producer took him two years. “Making the film seemed a reality only on my 42nd visit to a producer, when Ravi Rai, head of Small Town Boy Productions, loved the story,” says Hadawale.

The shooting was wrapped up in a 16-day schedule in Kopre Mandave, a leopard zone, with most of the cast comprising local villagers.

The film, which was finally ready in 2007, has done the rounds of various festivals—earning more than three times its production cost. More financial gains are on the way as the film, distributed by Parvez Damania and Azam Khan, releases on April 11. Before that, a special screening is organised at Cinemax, Versova, on March 19 to celebrate its success.

A career in films was unimaginable for the young director, who after passing class 10 with 37 per cent marks, was planning to help a relative sell vegetables. It’s only after stumbling into Lalit Kala Kendra, Pune, to get a degree in theatre that he came in touch with the vast world of cinema and started dreaming.

Now that he has tasted success, he is eager to go behind the camera soon for his next project, Hindi film Package India. And this time he dreams an even bigger production, shooting in America and roping in a superstar.

It is a double delight for Marathi director Mangesh Hadawale, whose debut film 'Tingya' bagged two top honours at the 10 th MAMI(Mumbai Academy of Movies Images) International Film Festival that came to an end in Mumbai on 13th March.
'Tingya' won the jury's award for BEST INDIAN FILM and also walked away with FIPRESCI (International Film Critics) Award.
The twin awards were presented to 28-year-old Hadawale by noted filmmaker Yash Chopra.

Marathi film TINGYA, produced by Ravi Rai's Small Town Boy Productions and directed by Mangesh Hadawale has been selected in the Pune International Film Festival!
The sixth Pune international film festival (Piff) will kick off at Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch on January 10 in the presence of celebrities from the world of cinema.
The venues are E-Square, Inox, Ganesh Kala Kreeda Rangmanch and National Film Archives of India (NFAI).
The festival will have several sections like international films, Marathi films., student film category, world cinema, country focus, retrospective, tribute, Indian panorama, gems from NFAI, blockbuster films of Indian cinema 2007 and films of life time achievement awardees.
The information and broadcasting ministry, government of Maharashtra, Pune municipal corporation, National Film Development Corporation, NFAI, Maxmueller Bhavan, Alliance Francaise, Film and Television Institute of India and Whistling Woods International will be actively involved in the 8-day event.
The committee is headed by city MP Suresh Kalmadi followed by noted film director Jabbar Patel as festival director, Sabina Sanghvi as vice-chairperson and advisory board comprising Yash Chopra, Subhash Ghai, Hema Malini, Manmohan Shetty, Sham Shroff, Nitin Manmohan and Milton Shefter (US).

With a belief that films were a medium for dialogue and communication among people, 27-year-old Mangesh Hadawale's journey to gain foothold in the film industry was a struggle period of two years. 'Tingya' written and directed by the young filmmaker hailing from a family of farmers, was screened in the Indian Panorama section last night at the ongoing 38th IFFI here. Armed with a script which dwells into innocence and emotion of a child in the backdrop of a grim reality of farmers suicides, Mangesh, who always wanted to be a filmmaker, knocked the doors of 41 producers till he found his wave length matching with noted television producer Ravi Rai. ''The two years of finding a producer was a painful process,'' he admitted. ''Since I was poor in communicating in English, I came into contact of Mr Rai through a common friend whom I had approached to write the draft of a letter to animal welfare board seeking permission to shoot since bulls featured prominently in my film,'' Mangesh said while addressing a press conference. Ravi Rai, who was also present, said , ''I asked Mangesh to narrate me his film's story in two minutes so that I could mention the details in the draft letter. I was impressed and asked him about the producer. When he said he had no producer, I offered to produce it myself. I asked Mangesh whether he would make the film exactly as he had scripted it.'' Speaking about his experiences with producers before he met Mr Rai, Mangesh said he had approached Mukta Arts promoted by Subhash Ghai, Pritish Nandy Communications (PNC), Ashutosh Gowarikar to name a few. ''Mukta Arts told me that they do not produce regional films.
But, later I came to know that they are doing one Marathi movie.
While Gowarikar told me that he was busy with Jodhaa Akbar. He also said that I should go ahead with my movie in case I found a producer. In fact, I received a SMS from him wishing me luck for the screening of my film in the Indian Panorama section,'' Mangesh said. He said some producers wanted me to cast Urmila Matondkar as 'Tingya's mother and incorporate a scene where Tingya's father goes to watch a Rakhi Sawant item number. A graduate in dramatics from the Pune University, Mangesh said he had made it clear to producers, whom he approached, that he wanted non- actors in his film and would shoot at actual locations. Besides, the film would be made in Marathi, he added. ''I associate myself with lot of incidents depicted in my film.
Since, 1993 on an average 26 farmers commit suicide every day in different parts of Maharashtra,'' he said.
He screen tested over 1200 boys to finally select the child actor, who hails from a family of Dhangars (Shephards) to essay the role of 'Tingya'. While the girl Rashida was selected from 700 girls. Ravi Rai admitted that despite being screened at the third eye Asian film festival in Mumbai, Asian film festival in Pune and IFFI, he had not got any distributors for the film. ''The film will be screened at Pune International Film Festival and Mumbai International film festival next year after which it will go to Berlin. I plan to release the film theatrically in April so that more and more children could see it during holidays. I am confident of its commercial success as it has been made from the heart,'' he added. ''I liked the script and the manner in which Mangesh had shot it so much that I wanted to own the film. I do not regret my decision,'' Mr Rai added.
He lamented that his Maharashtrian friends were among those who tried to discourage him from venturing into producing a Marathi film. ''For me there is no segmentation or a fence of language for creativity. Cinema has no language,'' he said.

Being content-rich facilitates an idea’s intelligent execution, believes Mangesh Hadawale. The debutant filmmaker is already grabbing attention with his Marathi film, Tingya. Shown at the recently concluded Fifth Asian Film Festival, the film closely analyses moments of innocence that question the discrimination between human beings and animals, from the eyes of seven-year-old Tingya.

Played by newcomer Sharad Goekar, Tingya is among the several non-actors who lend the film its much-appreciated authenticity. “Out of a starcast of 72 actors, more than 40 of them are non-actors chosen from Maharashtra’s rural heartland. Most of them saw the film camera for the first time, let alone having any experience in acting,” says Hadawale.

A dramatics graduate from University of Pune’s Lalit Kala Kendra, Hadawale spent four years to make the movie. He scripted the movie, as well. This was a result of a strong brainwave that hit Hadawale one fine night and he ended up writing the movie in one go—a catharsis of sorts. “I had to give vent to all the conflicts going on in my mind,” he says. But his script was turned down by various producers 41 times, until Ravi Rai came along.

Now his endeavours have paid off. Aamir Khan is already keen on watching Tingya and a meeting with the star actor-producer-director coming February, should yield good results. “I’ll be discussing a story idea with him,” says Hadawale, who will also shooting his first Hindi film Chhutta Na Mila, in March.

He prefers to reserve the right to scripting and directing his stories. “I want to direct my own scripts, instead of having another filmmaker lend his interpretation to my ideas. Very often, such an execution backfires and the film turns out to be a disappointment,” says Hadawale.

And, what would his films’ USP? “I want my films to stand solely on the basis of a strong script and good screenplay,” says Hadawale, who wants to work with newcomers. “That way, my films will be able to stand out better through content and quality, instead of stars overpowering the script,” he adds matter-of-factly.

For 26-year-old director Mangesh Hadawale, it was a difficult journey to make his film Tingya, which made its debut at the 38th IFFI to acclaim.

The debutant director’s path had several hurdles, foremost being his insistence that the film be narrated in his mothertongue – Marathi.

Tingya is a sensitive tale about a boy and his love for his bull, set against the politically charged background of farmers’ suicides and the life in rural Maharasthra.

The film is part-biographical.

"I have also gone through the same motions as Tingya, “says the first-time director.

Hadawale adds, “It’s as much a commentary on farmers as well as about the love for a boy for his bull whom he considers it to be his friend.”

As I was growing up and coming nearer and closer to sounds that expressed progress, development, growth and the speech that declared advancement, evolution, movement.. They were so void and depressed I felt. I could clearly see behind mask of harmony what I could see. And it dawned on me, that may be we had gained in numbers and figures but we had lost much larger. We had lost a conversation. We had lost a dialogue. And that was only possible in the remote villages or the workers in a mill or similar milieu. That set the writing of Tingya. And this story is not a story of a farmer from Maharshtra. It can be a story of a farmer from Assam, Bengal, MP,UP and any part of India.

It was the time to harvest the potatoes. Karbhari, the village farmer was all geared up to yield the tubers and payback the money he owed to the local village money lender Sahukar Tatya. It was one unfortunate evening that coming back from the graze, Chitangya, Karbhari’s bull fell into the leopard traps and broke his hind leg. Unable to stand on its feet and move, it was not possible for Chitangya to plough the fields. Persistent and constant medication and treatment by Karbhari and his wife Anjana could not resurrect Chitangya to employ. Karbhari now went through shivers. As a little delay in reaping would have the buds on the potatoes. Karbhari did not want to penalize himself more from the sahukar. Pandu, a neighbor farmer from the village had just committed a suicide two days ago as not able to return the money to Sahukar. The only choice he could think was to sell the bull to a local butcher and add some money to buy a young bull who could work. But Tingya, Karbhari’s 7 year old younger son did not think of Chitangya in the same breath. Chitangya was not just the animal for him. Chitangya was his elder brother. He was born with Chitangya. He was two months younger than Chitangya. They had shared so many moments together. They had grown up together. And he had a volley of valid questions to which no one had the answers... “Why wasn’t Rashida’s grandmother being sold to the butcher? She too was old and not working. Why were they all taking care of her and not his Chitangya? Chitangya certainly would not depart.” The death of the old grandmother in the neighboring house and selling of an animal come face to face to reveal the reality.

Chitangya is a painstakingly meticulous film about an emotional love story between a bull and a boy, Tingya. It inquires through Tingya’s innocence the validity of existence. It queries the order of the alive and breathing. Is it the man, animal, bird and the sea or vice versa? Who regulates and classifies the categories? Who arranges and sorts the array of the breathings? Is it legitimate?

Chitangya scrupulously and without a mistake talks about the most dark and turbulent times in the lives of farmers in India? If Coke and Pepsi mean globalization to us, then so true. Our economists have succeeded. The global consumptions have reached in India where water and electricity have yet to come? Does the globalization ends there? Or begins from there? Does the world know that the life of an Indian farmer is cheaper than a handful of coins? Do we also know?
